Nickel

Nickel — ductile, malleable, transition metal of fourth period of periodic table.

General characteristics

This silver-white alloy is mined from mineral (nickel), which looks like copper ore. It is heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant metal.

Chemical and physical properties of nickel:

  • Melting point 1453 °C;
  • Boiling point 2730−2915 °С;
  • Density of metal is 8.902 g/cm³;
  • Does not contain electrode potential;
  • Covalent radius of element is 115 pm;
  • Atomic number of chemical element 28;
  • Molar volume of 6.6 cm³/mol, etc.

Such proof make it possible to use nickel and nickel alloys in various industries.

Application area

Due to such advantages of nickel as heat resistance and corrosion resistance, metal is used in various fields:

  • Creation of stainless steels and alloys;
  • Manufacture of batteries and chemicals;
  • Aerospace industry;
  • Surface coating for corrosion protection (nickel plating);
  • Radiation technologies;
  • Medicine (braces, dentures, etc.);
  • Coins;
  • Music industry (winding strings, etc.).

Such popularity increases demand for metal and is increasing every year. In «world» of metal rolling, nickel and nickel alloys are supplied in form of ingots, wire, sheets and other options.
